Renko Bar Type NinjaTrader 8
Renko Bar Type is a custom Bar Type for NinjaTrader 8 that builds bricks purely from real tick price movement, with no time-based bar formation of any kind.
Key benefits
- Pure price, zero time bias: bricks close only on price movement, so a quiet session never forces a bar closed and a fast session never gets throttled by a fixed time interval.
- Configurable brick and reversal size: brick size and reversal multiplier are both set in ticks, scaled automatically to the instrument's tick size.
- Clean session gaps: when a session reopens away from the last close, the gap is filled with the same brick logic used intraday, so the chart stays continuous instead of showing a single distorted bar.
How it works
Every incoming tick is checked against the current brick's close level. Price needs to travel a full Brick Size to continue in the same direction, or a full Reversal Size to flip direction - and when it flips, the new brick's close still snaps to exactly one Brick Size, not the wider reversal distance. If one tick moves far enough to close several bricks at once (for example after a session gap), all of them are added in that same update, each carrying a small fixed decorative wick since there is no real tick data inside the gap to measure a true high/low from.

Renko Bar Type NinjaTrader 8
What Renko Bar Type does differently
Most Renko implementations on NinjaTrader are still built on top of an underlying time-based bar series, so a brick can be nudged by the timeframe feeding it. Renko Bar Type works directly from the tick feed instead: every brick is opened, grown and closed purely from real trade prices arriving through OnDataPoint, with no time-based construction anywhere in the logic.
That means a brick only ever closes because price traveled far enough - never because a clock ran out. On NinjaTrader 8, on any instrument and any session.

Brick Size, Reversal Multiplier and Gap Wick explained
Three inputs control the whole series:
- Brick Size (ticks): the distance price must travel, in ticks, to close a brick in the current direction.
- Reversal Multiplier: multiplies Brick Size to set the distance price must travel against the current direction before the series flips. The brick that flips direction still closes exactly one Brick Size away from the prior close - the reversal distance is only the trigger, not the close price.
- Gap Wick (ticks): a small fixed wick used only for bricks generated to fill a session gap, since there is no real tick data inside a gap to measure a true high or low from.

Every real (non-gap) brick's high and low come from the actual tick range traded while that brick was forming - the wick is genuine, not decorative.
Reading the bricks and session gaps
The currently forming brick is always visible and grows tick by tick toward its close level, so the chart never sits frozen waiting for a bar to finish. When a session reopens away from the previous close (weekends, holidays, news gaps), the gap is closed with the same brick-by-brick logic used intraday - if the gap spans several Brick Sizes, several bricks print from that single reopening, each carrying the fixed Gap Wick.

Historical accuracy note: because bricks are built from real ticks, accurate historical bricks require tick data or Tick Replay enabled on the data series. Without it, historical bricks are reconstructed from the underlying bar's close price only - coarser, with flatter wicks and the possibility of missed intrabar bricks. Real-time bricks are always built from genuine ticks regardless of this setting.

Is Renko Bar Type right for you?
- Traders who already use Renko-style charts and want brick formation with zero time-based influence, not an approximation layered on top of a time series.
- Futures and forex intraday traders who want session gaps handled consistently instead of showing as one oversized, undefined bar.
- Anyone stacking their own indicators or strategies on top of a Renko-style series and who needs the brick construction itself to be transparent and predictable.
