Why My Support and Resistance Levels Keep Failing to Hold on Retest
The problem: too many levels, too little follow-through
You draw support and resistance at every pivot. Price comes back, touches the line, and half the time it slices straight through as if the level never existed. The other half it holds, but you never know which will be which until after the fact. You're working too many levels, most of them meaningless, and your chart is a mess of horizontal lines that looked important in hindsight but offered no edge in real time.
The missing piece is not another way to spot pivots. It is a way to know which pivots were defended with real participation when they formed, and which pivots are still being defended every time price returns. That distinction, between a turn and a turn backed by volume, is what separates a reference line from a barrier the market will actually respect.
What Order Barrier TDV does
Order Barrier TDV marks price areas where a confirmed swing pivot coincided with an unusually one-sided burst of volume, then tracks how price behaves every time it revisits those areas. It is a mapping and context tool, not an entry-signal generator.
The indicator builds its map using:
- Confirmed pivot highs and lows over a user-set scan period
- Directional delta volume derived from candle direction and volume on each bar
- An adaptive volume threshold that decides which pivots earn a barrier zone
- Long-term ATR to size the thickness of each zone automatically
- Ongoing interaction tracking between price and every active zone
The result is a small number of volume-backed supply and demand zones instead of dozens of hand-drawn lines, plus a visual record of which zones are still holding and which have already given way.
The volume-validated barrier zone
The core concept is the Order Barrier: a swing pivot that is promoted to a zone only when the volume printed at that pivot was strongly one-sided. A pivot on its own tells you that price turned. A pivot with heavy directional volume behind it tells you the turn cost somebody real money, and those are the levels price tends to react to again.
What a valid Order Barrier looks like on your chart:
- A cyan box below a swing low (demand zone), built when that bar carried strong positive delta volume
- A pink box above a swing high (supply zone), built when that bar carried strong negative delta volume
- Fill intensity that scales with how large that delta volume was compared with the last 25 bars
- A Vol: readout inside every box, showing the exact net delta volume that created it
- Thickness, not a line, the box always has vertical depth, sized by ATR
Common mistake: treating every swing high and low as equal. Most levels on a chart are simply where price paused. With no participation behind them, there is nothing to defend them on the retest. The volume filter exists to leave those out, which also means a quiet range may produce very few boxes. That is the filter working, not a fault.
How you use it in a real session
Order Barrier TDV does not print BUY or SELL entries. There is no entry arrow, no long/short call, and no stop or target logic inside the tool. What it prints is four interaction states that describe how price treated a barrier, the entry decision and the risk plan stay with you.
The four states:
- Floor defence (cyan symbol below the bar): the bar's low crosses back up through the pivot price of a demand barrier, the zone was tested and held.
- Ceiling defence (pink symbol above the bar): the bar's high crosses back down through the pivot price of a supply barrier, the zone rejected price.
- C-UP label (cyan, at the supply pivot): the bar's low clears above the outer edge of a supply barrier for the first time, this ceiling has been taken out.
- C-DN label (pink, at the demand pivot): the bar's high drops below the outer edge of a demand barrier for the first time, the floor has been lost.
After a break, the barrier does not disappear. It changes state:
- A broken zone flips to the opposite colour and to a dashed border, marking it as already taken out.
- If price later returns and defends it, the zone goes back to a solid border and its original fill.
- While a zone is still in the broken state, a further clearance in the same direction prints another symbol marker, flagging an old ceiling now acting as a floor, or an old floor now acting as a ceiling.
This is the break-and-retest transition the tool was built to make visible.
Market conditions worth reading alongside those states:
- Repeated defence markers on the same zone: participation is still being spent defending it.
- A C-UP or C-DN on a box whose fill is barely tinted: the barrier that just broke was a light one.
- Price drifting between two barriers with no markers at all: nothing is being decided, so there is no context edge.
- A break followed shortly by a defence marker on the same zone from the other side: the role-reversal setup this tool was designed to track.

Who it fits
Order Barrier TDV is best suited for:
- Supply and demand traders and support/resistance traders who want levels filtered by participation rather than drawn by eye.
- Intraday and swing traders on volume-bearing markets, futures, indices and crypto. On spot FX the feed is tick volume, so treat the filter as a rough proxy there.
- Break-and-retest playbook users who need one consistent, mechanical definition of "broken" and "defended" instead of a judgement call.
- Traders who already own an entry trigger, Order Barrier supplies context, not a system to follow blindly.
A barrier is a reaction area, never a promise. The value is in knowing which levels the market has actually paid to defend, then working fewer and better-located ideas around them with your own risk management in place.
What it does not do
Order Barrier TDV does not generate entry signals. There is no arrow, no alert, and no built-in stop-loss or target calculation. If you need a directional call or a complete trading system, this is the wrong tool.
It does not work well in extremely low-volume conditions. A thin market produces weak delta readings, so the volume filter may let through marginal pivots or skip valid ones. The tool is designed for liquid instruments during active sessions.
It does not tell you which direction price will break. The labels C-UP and C-DN describe what just happened, a clearance, not what comes next. Role reversals are common, and a broken ceiling can immediately flip to a defended floor.
It does not eliminate whipsaws. A barrier can be defended on one test and broken on the next. The filter raises the odds that a zone matters, but it cannot remove the risk that any level will fail.
Finally, the tool holds up to 50 barrier boxes on the chart. In a trending market with frequent pivots, the oldest barriers drop off as new ones form. If you rely on a very old zone for your plan, that zone may no longer be tracked.
Pairing with other tools
Order Barrier TDV is a context layer. It works best when combined with a directional or timing tool that provides the actual entry.
For traders working break-and-retest setups, Swing Trendline Break & Fakeout TDV adds structural breaks and fakeout detection at the same decision points where Order Barrier marks a floor or ceiling defence.
For traders who need clearer supply and demand zone logic without the volume filter, Core Supply & Demand TDV offers a complementary zone-mapping approach built on multi-timeframe pivot structure rather than delta volume.
Combining two tools does not improve results on its own. The edge comes from using the context one tool provides to filter or confirm the signals from the other, according to your own tested rules.
Trading risk
Order Barrier TDV is an analysis tool. It does not place trades, it cannot know what price will do next, and no indicator removes market risk. Trading involves the risk of loss. Always trade with your own plan, position sizing, and risk management. Nothing here is investment advice.
