Why Liquidity Sweeps Fail When You Chase the Reclaim Too Late

by ZynAlgoAugust 12, 20266 min read

The problem with most sweep-and-reclaim setups

You watch price wick below a session low, then close back above it. Structure breaks. You enter on the next candle. And the pullback starts immediately, because the actual entry window closed halfway through the reclaim bar, and you arrived late.

Most sweep indicators only check that price broke a level. They say nothing about when in the candle that happened. The result is a stream of technically correct signals that land after the move is already exhausted.

Candle Phase Sweep Pulse is a liquidity-sweep indicator built around one narrow timing gate: the structure break must happen early enough in the confirming candle that there is still room to act on it.

What the candle-phase gate does

Every closed candle is measured against a reference swing high or low, confirmed over the lookback period. Price must sweep beyond that level by at least the minimum sweep distance, with a wick-to-body ratio that marks a genuine rejection rather than a shallow poke. Then it must close back on the safe side of the swept level, arming a pending setup.

The next candle has to break structure, the opposite extreme of the sweep candle, to confirm the signal. And that break must happen before a phase limit, measured as a percentage of the confirming candle's own high-to-low range.

By default the limit is set at 50 percent. A break that lands past that point is rejected, even when sweep, reclaim and structure all agree. The candle-phase gate is what stops you chasing the reclaim candle's close, which usually produces the worst fill of the whole move.

How a signal is built

Signals are evaluated on closed candles only, never on the candle still forming.

For a BUY:

  • Price sweeps below the reference low (a prior swing low or, optionally, the previous session low) by at least the minimum sweep distance, default 15 points
  • The sweep candle closes back above the reference with a qualifying rejection wick
  • The next candle breaks above the sweep candle's high inside the confirmation window (3 bars default)
  • That break lands before the candle-phase limit
  • Optional filters, EMA trend, minimum ATR, spread cap, per-direction cooldown and manual news windows, allow the bar

A SELL is the mirror: a sweep above the reference high, a close back below it, then an early break below the sweep candle's low within the window, subject to the same filters and cooldown.

What appears on your MetaTrader 4 chart:

  • A signal marker offset from price by an ATR multiple, so the chart stays readable
  • A trade box with entry at the signal candle close, a stop beyond the sweep extreme plus an ATR buffer (0.50 ATR default), and R-multiple targets
  • TP1 at 1R is on by default; further targets are configurable
  • A dashboard reporting the active reference, the live candle-phase percent and the last signal, plus alerts for BUY, SELL and invalidation

How to use it in a session

Candle Phase Sweep Pulse fits intraday work on M1 to M30 charts, gold, forex majors and indices where session highs and lows and swept swings are part of the structure you already watch.

Install the .ex4 file into the MQL4/Indicators folder inside your terminal's data folder, refresh the Navigator panel in MetaTrader 4, then drag Candle Phase Sweep Pulse onto the chart. Every threshold is editable in the Inputs tab.

You decide the lookback for the swing reference, the minimum sweep distance, the wick-to-body ratio that qualifies a rejection, the confirmation window, the candle-phase limit and the optional EMA trend filter. The defaults are a starting point; they are not tuned to any specific instrument or session.

The stop and targets are attached to the signal when it prints, not sized afterwards. That workflow fits you if you would rather see the complete risk picture before you decide, and it fits you less well if you prefer to layer exits manually.

An optional displacement filter can require the structure break to clear the level by a set ATR multiple, separating a clean break from a marginal one. The per-direction cooldown (6 bars default) prevents consecutive signals stacking up in the same direction before the first setup has had time to resolve.

Pairing it with other tools

Candle Phase Sweep Pulse is a liquidity and structure tool. It does not include divergence, trend strength or re-entry logic after an initial move.

If you want divergence confirmation on sweep setups, Squeeze Divergence Radar MT4 tracks RSI and MACD divergence alongside volatility compression and can run on the same chart. If you are looking for a re-entry tool after the first leg of a trend, Efficiency Step Reentry MT4 waits for a pullback into an efficient zone and a resumption candle, it complements the sweep logic by covering the next phase of the move.

Do not pair Candle Phase Sweep Pulse with another sweep or reclaim indicator. You will not improve the timing; you will only add conflicting rules and miss the entries both tools would have taken separately.

What it does not do

Candle Phase Sweep Pulse will not alert you to every level touch. It only confirms a sweep when there is enough candle time left to act on it. If you want a notification the instant price wicks a level, regardless of timing, this is the wrong tool.

It does not adapt the reference automatically to every micro swing. The lookback is fixed in the inputs, and the session high/low is optional. On a ranging day with no clear structure, the reference may be too distant to produce actionable setups.

The candle-phase gate is a timing filter, not a guarantee. A signal that prints early in the confirming candle can still reverse if the macro environment, news or liquidity conditions shift. The phase limit reduces late entries; it does not eliminate losing trades.

The default thresholds are not optimised for any specific symbol, timeframe or session. If you apply them blindly to an instrument you have not tested, you will get signals that do not fit the way that market moves. The inputs exist so you can tune them.

This indicator does not constitute financial advice. Trading involves risk, and past performance does not guarantee future results. You are responsible for your own risk management and position sizing.

Who it fits

It fits you if you trade around session highs and lows and swept swings, if you have been burned chasing a reclaim candle too late, and if you want the timing filter built in rather than estimated by eye.

It fits you if you would rather have the stop and targets attached to the signal than size them afterwards, and if you are comfortable working intraday on M1 to M30 charts.

It fits you less well if you want a sweep alert on every level, if you prefer to manage exits manually without pre-drawn boxes, or if you trade position timeframes where the candle-phase logic is less relevant.

A sweep is only useful while there is candle time left to act on it. Candle Phase Sweep Pulse exists to separate those from the ones that are already over.
