How to filter order block zones when your chart is cluttered with levels

by ZynAlgoAugust 6, 20267 min read

The problem with too many order blocks

Your chart shows sixteen order block zones, eight fair value gaps, and three sets of supply-and-demand boxes, but when price reaches any of them nothing consistent happens. You cannot trade every level, and the tool that drew them all cannot tell you which ones actually matter. The clutter itself becomes the obstacle.

ICT SMC MT5 was built to solve that specific problem. Instead of mapping every possible zone, it draws only the order blocks that were created by a qualified break of structure or change of character, and it removes them from the chart as soon as price has worked through the midpoint. What you are left with is a short list of levels worth watching, not a wall of boxes competing for attention.

What ICT SMC MT5 does

ICT SMC MT5 is a chart-mapping tool for MetaTrader 5 that identifies structural breaks and marks the order block zones those breaks created. It does not try to teach the entire Smart Money Concepts curriculum or automate your entry decisions. It does one narrow job: keep the chart readable while still showing you where institutional order flow left a trace.

The tool reads swing highs and lows from your chart using a configurable pivot length, then watches for a candle that closes beyond the last external swing with enough body and range to qualify as a real break. When that happens, it looks back up to eight bars for the last opposite-direction candle before the move started, and that candle becomes the order block zone.

What appears on your chart:

  • Break of Structure (BOS) and Change of Character (CHoCH) labels where structure events occurred
  • Liquidity sweep markers (BSL Sweep / SSL Sweep) when price pushes past a swing, stalls, then reverses hard
  • Order block zones drawn as green (demand) or red (supply) boxes, labelled and extended to the right
  • Price action markers, pin bars, engulfing candles, inside-bar breaks, rejection wicks, that print only when they occur near a zone, external swing or failed break
  • Optional EMA 21, 50, 200 lines, plus a higher-timeframe EMA reference if you want it

By default, the tool caps the number of live zones at three per side. Overlapping or near-identical zones are rejected so duplicates do not stack up. A zone that is thinner than 0.20 ATR is widened to stay visible, and a zone disappears once price has traded through its 50% midpoint.

How a break-validated order block is built

A zone is only created when all of the following align on a confirmed bar:

  • Structure event, a BOS or CHoCH must fire first; with no break there is no zone
  • Break quality, the breaking candle needs a body of at least 45% of its range, and a range of at least 0.60 ATR
  • Origin candle, the tool looks back up to 8 bars for the most recent candle running against the break
  • Displacement or FVG, depending on OB Strictness, the origin candle must be followed by a fair value gap (Strict), by a gap or a strong wide-range candle (Balanced), or by nothing at all (Loose)
  • Zone geometry, OB Zone Mode decides whether the box uses body plus wick, or the full high-to-low range

This multi-step filter is why you end up with fewer zones. Many candles look strong in isolation, but only a fraction of them anchor a real structural shift.

How to use it in a live session

ICT SMC MT5 issues no buy or sell signals. There are no entry alerts, no trade dashboard, and no automation. Everything on the chart is context, so your workflow is about reading the map rather than obeying an arrow.

Reading the structure labels:

  • BOS, price closed beyond the last external swing with a strong body; structure carried on in the same direction
  • CHoCH, price closed back through the protected swing after a liquidity sweep, printed in orange; this flags a possible shift, not a confirmed reversal
  • BSL Sweep / SSL Sweep, a three-candle manipulation sequence: a strong candle pushes past the last external high or low, the next candle stalls, and the third closes back hard the other way

Working with the zones:

  • Wait for price to come back to a live zone instead of chasing the break itself
  • Green triangles below a bar and red triangles above a bar are price action markers; in the default Premium Only mode they print only when the candle is a pin bar, engulfing candle, inside-bar break or rejection wick and price is near a zone, an external swing or a failed break
  • A marker says a reaction happened where the tool expected one; confirmation, sizing, stops and targets stay your decision
  • When a zone disappears, price has reached its 50% mid-line or closed decisively beyond it; the zone has been used and is no longer treated as fresh
  • Cooling-off logic keeps markers at least 8 bars apart, so one busy area cannot spam arrows

If you want more markers for study rather than for trading, switch PA Visual Mode to All PA, that drops the near-a-zone requirement and prints considerably more.

Who it fits

ICT SMC MT5 suits traders who already work with structure and want the bookkeeping handled for them:

  • Discretionary traders who trade order block retests and want the zones filtered by a real structural break
  • Intraday traders on liquid markets, indices, gold and major FX pairs, where swing levels get respected
  • Traders working anywhere from 5-minute to 4-hour charts; External Swing Length tunes the sensitivity per timeframe
  • Anyone who would rather read three zones per side than a screen full of boxes

It is not built for traders who want something to follow. There is no arrow that says buy, no alert to wait for, and no automation. The value is in seeing fewer, better-qualified levels and making the call yourself.

What it does not do

ICT SMC MT5 does not attempt the whole Smart Money Concepts curriculum. It does not:

  • Draw fair value gaps separately; they are used internally to validate displacement but not drawn as standalone zones
  • Provide entry or exit signals; the price action markers are context clues, not trade triggers
  • Work on every timeframe or market condition; in choppy, range-bound markets with no clear swing structure the tool will produce fewer or no zones at all
  • Replace a trader's discretion; you still decide which zones to trade, what confirmation you need, and how to size the position
  • Guarantee that a zone will hold; zones are areas where price previously reacted, not barriers that must hold in the future

The tool is also sensitive to your swing length setting. If External Swing Length is too short for your timeframe, the chart will fill with micro-swings and the filtering advantage disappears. If it is too long, real structural breaks may be missed. Tuning that parameter to match your market and session is part of the setup.

Pairing it with other tools

ICT SMC MT5 handles structure and order block identification. It does not confirm trend direction or measure momentum. For that reason, it pairs well with Adaptive ATR Trend MT5, which gives you a dynamic trend reference that adjusts to volatility, or Squeeze Divergence Radar MT5, which flags momentum divergences at the highs and lows where liquidity sweeps are most likely to occur.

Neither pairing changes the probability of a zone holding, but each adds a layer of context that can help you decide which zones to prioritise.

Installing and configuring it

Copy the .ex5 file into the MQL5/Indicators folder inside your terminal's data folder, refresh the Navigator panel in MetaTrader 5, then drag ICT SMC onto the chart. Swing length, OB strictness, zone mode, PA filters and EMA display are all editable in the Inputs tab.

Start with the defaults, External Swing Length 10, OB Strictness Balanced, Max Zones Per Side 3, and adjust from there based on your timeframe and how many zones you want to see.

Trading involves risk. Nothing this indicator draws is a recommendation, and past chart behaviour does not predict future results.
