Why Your Stop Gets Hit on the Spike Then Price Reverses Without You

The problem
You are short from resistance, the news hits, price spikes two points through your stop in a single candle, and you are out. Fifteen minutes later the chart is back below your entry and pushing lower. You got spiked, not wrong, but the result is the same.
This happens because the spike is designed to hit stops, not to reverse the trend. Price pushes through an obvious level, grabs the resting orders behind it, and fades straight back inside. The traders who win are not the ones who chased the spike; they are the ones who waited for the reclaim and took the reversal when volatility settled.
What News Sweep Sentinel does
News Sweep Sentinel is a MetaTrader 5 indicator that watches for liquidity sweeps, candles that push through prior swing levels and then fail to hold, and fires a signal only when price closes back through the swept level. It refuses to act on the break itself, because a level being pierced proves nothing. What matters is whether price can hold beyond it.
The tool tracks:
- Prior swing highs and lows across a 20-bar lookback, treated as resting liquidity
- Sweep candles that cleared the level by at least 0.15 × ATR and showed at least 35% wick
- Reclaim closes back through the level within 15 bars
- Volatility measured as ATR(14) against a 50-period baseline
- Live spread on the confirmation candle
- Scheduled economic events pulled natively from the MetaTrader 5 calendar
It prints two tiers of signal. A regular BUY SWEEP or SELL SWEEP can occur any time structure and volatility conditions are met. A PREMIUM BUY or PREMIUM SELL is the same setup occurring inside a scheduled event window or its 60-minute tail, where the liquidity grab is most deliberate.
Each signal is labelled with the price of the swept level, not a bare arrow. One signal per level; once a level has fired it will not fire again.
How it is used
You load News Sweep Sentinel onto a chart, gold M5, EUR/USD M15, or an index M1, and let it run. The panel reports Calendar: OK and the number of cached events if your broker feed supports calendar data. If it shows Calendar: N/A, the tool still produces regular sweep signals; only the premium tier goes quiet.
Event windows appear as vertical dotted lines. Swept levels are drawn as dashed horizontal lines with a SWEPT label carrying the exact price. Blue arrows below a bar mark buy sweeps; orange arrows above mark sell sweeps.
The panel updates in real time:
- Setup shows Idle, BUY ARMED, or SELL ARMED, so you see a setup forming before it fires
- Each gate, ATR, Spread, HTF bias, Cooldown, reports Pass or Block
- The lower pane plots working values: wick ratio, ATR, ATR baseline, spread, and lanes for News Window, Cooldown and Setup state
A sweep is registered only when every condition holds:
- Clearance, the candle pushed past the swing level by at least 0.15 × ATR
- Wick evidence, at least 35% of the sweep candle range is wick
- Reclaim, a later candle closes back through the level within 15 bars
- Invalidation guard, six consecutive bars closing beyond the swept level cancel the setup
- Volatility, ATR(14) must be at least 0.85 × its 50-period baseline, and the confirmation candle range must stay under 3.0 × ATR
- Spread, confirmation candle closes with spread at or below 30 points
You may switch on an optional H1 EMA200 filter to take longs only above the average and shorts only below it. Stop and target guides are available but ship disabled; when enabled, the stop sits 0.25 × ATR beyond the swept wick, with targets at 1.0R, 2.0R and 3.0R.

Who it fits
News Sweep Sentinel is built for traders who already know the first candle after a release is a trap:
- Gold traders on M1 to M15, where sweeps around scheduled releases are most pronounced
- Forex majors at M5 to M30 and indices at M1 to M15
- Liquidity and structure traders who want the sweep-and-reclaim sequence detected rather than eyeballed
- Anyone who has been stopped out by a wick and then watched price return without them
It assumes you understand what a liquidity sweep is and why waiting for the reclaim matters. If you trade breakouts in the direction of the spike, this tool will frustrate you.
What it does not do
News Sweep Sentinel does not signal during the spike itself. If you want to trade the first candle after a release, this is the wrong tool.
It does not work in quiet markets. When ATR drops below 0.85 × baseline or spread widens beyond 30 points, the tool goes silent. That silence is intentional, the setup requires volatility and tight execution conditions, and firing signals outside those conditions would produce false entries.
It does not predict direction. A swept level tells you where resting orders were grabbed, not where price will go next. You still need a bias, from higher timeframe structure, a trend filter, or your own read, to decide which signals to take.
Calendar access depends on your broker. If the MetaTrader 5 calendar feed is unavailable, premium-tier signals will not fire. Regular sweep signals continue to work.
The tool will not fire two signals in the same direction within six bars, and it will not re-use a swept level. Once a level has produced a signal it is retired. If you are trading a range and expect repeated sweeps at the same price, you will need to adjust swing lookback or manually track the level.
How it pairs with other tools
News Sweep Sentinel tells you when a level has been swept and reclaimed, but it does not tell you whether the reclaim is with-trend or counter-trend. Pairing it with Adaptive ATR Trend MT5 gives you a simple higher-timeframe bias filter so you can take only the sweeps that align with the prevailing direction.
If you trade structure and want additional confirmation at big figures or round numbers, Big Figure Trap Signals MT5 watches for similar rejection behaviour at psychologically significant levels. The two tools can run on the same chart without overlap, News Sweep Sentinel focuses on swing-level liquidity; Big Figure Trap focuses on round-number psychology.
Installation
Copy the .ex5 file into the MQL5/Indicators folder inside your terminal data folder, refresh the Navigator panel in MetaTrader 5, then drag News Sweep Sentinel onto a chart. Swing lookback, sweep buffer, wick ratio, spread cap and event windows are all editable on the Inputs tab.
Trading risk
Trading involves risk. Nothing this indicator draws is a recommendation, and past chart behaviour does not predict future results. A swept level is evidence of where liquidity was taken, not a guarantee of reversal. Manage position size and risk on every trade.
