intraday fakeout signals

Why your Donchian breakout entries keep reversing on you

by ZynAlgoAugust 15, 20266 min read

The problem

Price spends twelve bars inside a tight Donchian channel on M15 gold.

Finally it pierces the lower band by eight pips.

You enter short on the close, and three bars later you are stopped as price rockets back through the midline.

You were not slow. You followed the breakout rule exactly. But the first breach failed, and the real move was the retest in the other direction.

What Donchian Trap Retest Matrix does

Donchian Trap Retest Matrix is a failed-breakout signal indicator for MetaTrader 5.

It does not signal the initial breach of a Donchian band. It waits for that breach to fail and then signals the retest, the move that punishes the breakout traders.

Every closed bar is tested against a five-layer filter:

  • Channel, the 20-period Donchian upper band, lower band and midline.
  • Failed breach, a pierce beyond the band by at least 0.15 ATR that closes back inside within one to three bars.
  • Trigger, a candle closing beyond the reclaim bar's extreme, with the 20-EMA baseline agreeing on direction.
  • Strength tier, an optional dominant wick and tick-volume surge that separate strong signals from regular ones.
  • Context filters, ATR floor, spread cap, trigger-body size and minimum channel width.

Only when the failed breach and the trigger align does a BUY or SELL arrow print.

The setup stays armed for five bars, so it can fire repeatedly on active intraday markets.

How it identifies the trap

Most Donchian tools tell you when price breaks the band.

This one tells you when the break has already been rejected and a reversal is forming.

On intraday gold, indices and forex majors the first breach of a channel edge fails far more often than it runs, especially during the first few hours of a session when ranges are still being established.

The mistake the tool is built around is buying the first close beyond the upper band or selling the first close below the lower band, exactly the entry the retest is designed to fade.

The trap sequence

Sweep, price trades beyond the band by at least 0.15 ATR (editable via SweepATRMin). A touch is not enough. The breach must be measurable.

Reclaim, a close back inside the band within one to three bars. This is the failure. The breakout traders are now offside.

Trigger, a candle closes beyond the reclaim bar's high (or low for short setups) while the 20-EMA baseline slopes with the trade. The reversal is confirmed.

Strong tier, if the trigger candle's wick is at least 55 percent of its range and tick volume is at least 1.2 times its twenty-bar average, the signal is marked as strong. This filter is optional and can be disabled.

Reading a signal

Signals confirm on closed bars only. A live-bar preview may appear but will not alert until the bar closes.

A BUY arrow prints when:

  • Price pierced the Donchian lower band by at least 0.15 ATR and closed back above it within the reclaim window.
  • A trigger candle closes above the reclaim bar high with its close above a rising 20-EMA baseline.
  • ATR, spread, body-size and channel-width filters all pass.

A SELL arrow is the mirror: a failed breach above the upper band, a reclaim close back below, then a trigger below the reclaim bar low with a falling EMA baseline.

What appears on your chart:

  • Upper and lower Donchian bands with a shaded channel, midline, and a green/red/gray EMA ribbon.
  • Armed trap zones and failed-break markers so you can see where the setup is waiting.
  • A BUY or SELL arrow with entry at the trigger close, a stop beyond the failed sweep extreme plus 0.25 ATR, TP1 at 1R and TP2 at the opposite Donchian band, and an optional EMA20-plus-ATR trail.
  • Alerts for setup armed, regular and strong triggers, TP/SL zone touches, and opposite-trap invalidation.

Every threshold is editable in the Inputs tab after installation.

When to use it in a session

You open an M15 chart on XAUUSD at 8:00 AM Eastern.

Price has been oscillating inside a thirty-bar Donchian channel.

At 8:45 a single candle pierces the upper band by twelve pips and closes back inside by the next bar.

The tool marks a failed-break level and arms a SELL setup.

Two bars later price closes below the reclaim bar low with the 20-EMA sloping down and ATR above the minimum threshold.

A SELL arrow prints. Entry is the close. Stop is above the failed sweep high plus 0.25 ATR. TP1 is one times risk. TP2 is the lower Donchian band.

You did not guess. The tool waited for the trap to complete and the confirmation candle to close before it signaled.

What it does not do

Donchian Trap Retest Matrix does not predict the future and it does not guarantee that a failed breakout will reverse.

It signals when the trap structure is complete and the trigger has confirmed, but it cannot tell you whether the move will reach TP1 or stop out.

It fits you less well in choppy, directionless ranges where repeated small fakeouts can produce frequent signals with little follow-through.

It also weakens during real news expansion when a breach becomes a genuine breakout rather than a trap. That is why the ATR floor and spread cap filters exist, to reduce signals during conditions the tool was not designed for.

Tick volume is broker-dependent. If your MT5 feed does not report reliable tick volume, disable the strong-tier filter or ignore the strength classification.

This is not a set-and-forget system. You still decide whether to take the signal, where to move your stop, and when to exit.

Pairing it with other tools

Donchian Trap Retest Matrix tells you when a Donchian breakout has failed and a retest is forming.

It does not tell you whether the larger trend supports the reversal or whether momentum is building behind the move.

If you want confirmation that the retest is occurring inside a favorable trend structure, Adaptive ATR Trend MT5 can provide a longer-term directional filter so you only take traps that align with the higher timeframe.

If you want additional confirmation that the reversal candle carried real conviction, Wick Absorption Reversal Pulse MT5 can help you distinguish between a weak retrace and a candle that absorbed the prior move and closed with strength.

Neither pairing is required. The tool works on its own. But if you already trade with a trend or momentum overlay, these two fit the same workflow without adding conflicting logic.

Installing it

Copy the .ex5 file into the MQL5/Indicators folder inside your MetaTrader 5 terminal's data folder.

Refresh the Navigator panel.

Drag Donchian Trap Retest Matrix onto your chart.

Every parameter, sweep ATR threshold, reclaim window, EMA period, ATR floor, spread cap, strong-tier wick and volume ratios, is editable in the Inputs tab.

Start with the defaults on M5 to M30 on an active pair or index. Adjust the filters only after you understand what each one is blocking and why.
