Why Stop Hunts at Round Numbers Keep Reversing After the Sweep

by ZynAlgoAugust 6, 20267 min read

The problem with trading round-number sweeps too early

You see price drive down through 2000 on gold, trigger every stop sitting below it, and then close 40 points higher on the same candle. You know the pattern. You've watched it happen at big figures, half figures, and quarter levels across indices and FX pairs. The problem is not recognising the sweep, the problem is knowing when the reversal is real and not just another wick inside a trend that keeps going.

Most traders fade the level itself or enter the moment price trades through it. Both approaches ignore the evidence that matters: whether price actually reclaimed the level on the close, how much rejection appeared in the wick, and whether the candle range fits the instrument's normal volatility. Big Figure Trap Signals MT5 exists to mark the completed sequence, not the bait.

What it does

This is a round-number reversal indicator for MetaTrader 5. It watches every closed candle against an automatically built grid of psychological levels and marks only the candles that sweep past a level, then close back on the original side with a meaningful rejection wick.

The indicator measures five gates on every bar:

  • Location, the distance from the nearest level on the grid
  • Sweep, whether the candle actually traded beyond that level by the required sweep distance (default 50 points), not merely touched it
  • Reclaim, whether the close came back past the level and past the candle's own midpoint
  • Rejection, the wick left on the swept side, as a share of the whole candle range (30 percent for regular signals, 45 percent for premium)
  • Context, the candle range must sit between 0.6 and 2.5 times ATR(14), so neither a dead bar nor a runaway spike qualifies

Only when all five conditions align does an arrow appear. The sweep alone is not the signal.

How the level grid works

The grid is derived from the symbol itself, so the same settings work across instruments with very different prices. The big-figure step comes from the symbol's own digits, and half and quarter levels are switched on by default. The working unit is a quarter of the big step.

The status panel names the level in play, its class, and how far price sits from it, for example "Level : 4102.50 QTR d=58.0pt". It also prints the grid spacing and a separation check: if the levels sit closer together than 1.2 times the sweep distance, price would be permanently trapped between two of them, and signals are blocked.

A common way to lose money at round numbers is to fade the level itself. That is not what this indicator marks. Until price has gone through the level by the sweep distance, there is nothing to reclaim, and no arrow can appear.

How you use it in a live session

The whole sequence resolves on one closed candle. There is no arming state to track and nothing carries over to the next bar.

A BUY signal prints when price sweeps below the nearest level, closes back above it and above its own midpoint, with a lower wick clearing the ratio, a valid range, adequate level spacing, and a clear cooldown. A SELL is the mirror image above the level.

What appears on the chart:

  • An arrow below the candle for BUY and above it for SELL, offset by 0.30 ATR
  • A trade box with entry at the signal candle close, stop beyond the swept extreme plus 0.25 ATR of buffer, then targets at 1R and 2R by default (3R available)
  • A status panel naming the last signal and its tier, the level in play, every gate listed above, the live simulated position, and the running Profit Factor and Win Rate of the signals on that chart
  • Result markers where a target or stop was reached, so you can read the outcome of a past signal without scrolling the panel

The indicator marks the chart rather than sending pop-up alerts. That is deliberate: the panel carries the state, and the gates are meant to be read before the arrow, not after it.

Working ranges: M5 to H1 suits the default grid on most instruments, with M15 the reference timeframe used in the product screenshots. On symbols with unusual digits or synthetic pricing, check the grid line spacing on the chart before trading it, and set the big-figure step by hand if the auto value does not match the levels you actually watch.

Who it fits

It suits you if:

  • You already trade liquidity sweeps and stop hunts around round numbers, and want the criteria written down instead of judged by eye
  • You prefer a graded signal, premium versus regular, to a single yes or no
  • You want the stop anchored to the swept extreme rather than a fixed distance
  • You work intraday on instruments where round numbers are watched: gold, FX majors, and indices

What it does not do

It does not mark breakouts. A genuine break that keeps running is exactly the case this indicator is built to stay silent through, and during a strong trend it will sit quiet for long stretches. If you trade continuation and momentum, this tool will frustrate you.

It does not work on every timeframe. On very low timeframes the grid may become too dense, and on higher timeframes the sweep distance may need manual adjustment to match the instrument's normal range. It is not a universal one-click solution.

It does not guarantee that the reversal will reach the target. The stop and target boxes are measured references, not predictions. The panel prints historical Profit Factor and Win Rate for signals on that chart, but those numbers describe past behaviour on your specific settings and symbol, they do not predict future results.

It does not replace your own read of market structure, trend, and session context. The indicator marks candles that meet the criteria. Whether you take the signal is still your decision.

How it pairs with other tools

If you already use a trend or momentum filter, this indicator can serve as the entry timing layer. News Sweep Sentinel MT5 watches similar liquidity events around scheduled releases and can help you avoid trading a round-number reversal into a news-driven spike. Efficiency Step Reentry MT5 marks pullback entries inside a trend, so the two can work on separate charts without overlap, one for reversals, one for continuation.

Do not combine this with another reversal indicator and expect the overlapping signals to improve results. The tools will conflict, not reinforce.

Installing it

Copy the .ex5 file into the MQL5/Indicators folder inside your terminal data folder, refresh the Navigator panel in MetaTrader 5, then drag Big Figure Trap Signals onto a chart. If you were issued an Access Key, paste it into the Access Key input. Every threshold listed above is editable in the Inputs tab.

Trading involves risk of loss. This indicator is provided for educational purposes and is not financial advice. Past performance and backtested behaviour do not guarantee future results. No tool can eliminate the risk inherent in trading leveraged instruments.

If you work MetaTrader 5 intraday and round-number reversals are already part of your process, this tool documents the criteria and marks the chart. If you are still building your approach to liquidity sweeps, start on demo and verify that the grid spacing matches the levels you actually watch before risking capital.
