Why Long Wick Reversals Fail Without Volume, and How to Filter Them
The problem: every long wick looks like a reversal
You see a pin bar with a huge lower wick at support. The tail swept below, closed back inside, and it looks exactly like absorption.
You enter long, set your stop beyond the wick, and watch price drift back down through your entry within a handful of bars.
The wick was there. The level was there. What was missing was participation, the evidence that anyone actually defended that level hard enough to turn it.
What a wick alone cannot tell you
A long rejection wick says price reached a level and returned. It does not say whether that return was active or passive.
Wick Absorption Reversal Pulse for MetaTrader 4 is built on the idea that a wick only matters when the tick-volume behind it was abnormal. A rejection candle with low participation is exactly the setup that fails, the tail that looked like absorption but was really just noise.
The indicator scores every closed candle against five criteria before a signal can print:
- Wick dominance, a lower or upper wick at least a configurable ratio times the candle body, above a minimum wick size
- Participation, a tick-volume z-score that is elevated against its lookback period
- Location, the candle sitting at a recent support, resistance or swept-liquidity zone
- Reclaim, the close returning across the wick midpoint, in the upper half for a long or the lower half for a short
- Confirmation, next-bar follow-through through the rejection candle's extreme, unless aggressive mode is enabled
Only when the wick, the volume and the location align, and follow-through confirms, does a BUY or SELL arrow arrive.
How the volume filter changes what you trade
The difference between a wick with elevated volume and one without is the difference between absorption and drift.
Wick Absorption Reversal Pulse measures the tick-volume z-score of every rejection candle, how many standard deviations above the mean it sits for a configurable lookback. A wick with a z-score of 2.5 means participation was abnormal. A wick with a z-score of 0.3 means it drifted.
The mistake this avoids is trading every long tail. A wick without elevated volume is exactly the rejection that fails, because no one stepped in hard enough to hold the level.
The indicator displays the wick ratio and the volume z-score in a status panel on every signal, so you can see exactly how abnormal the participation was before you take the trade.

How a signal is built
Signals are confirmed on closed candles, with follow-through required in the default mode.
A BUY prints when:
- A candle prints a lower wick at least the wick ratio times its body, with an elevated tick-volume z-score
- The close returns above the wick midpoint and price is at support or a swept low
- The next bar trades above the rejection candle high (skipped only in aggressive mode)
- The candle clears the minimum ATR fraction and the EMA trend filter allows it
A SELL is the mirror image: an upper-wick rejection with elevated volume at resistance, close back below the wick midpoint, and a next-bar break below the rejection low, with the same filters.
What appears on the chart:
- Support, resistance and swept-liquidity zones
- The scored rejection candles and a status panel with wick ratio and volume z-score
- A BUY or SELL arrow with entry at confirmation, a stop beyond the wick extreme plus a buffer, TP1 at the nearest opposing micro swing and TP2 at the prior range midpoint or edge, with optional break-even after 1R
- Alerts for BUY Absorption Pulse, SELL Absorption Pulse, zone retest and confirmation failed, each carrying the wick ratio and volume z-score
Using it in a live session
You would run this on gold M1-M15, forex majors M5-H1 or indices M1-M5, mostly in the London and New York sessions.
The typical workflow: the indicator marks support, resistance and swept-liquidity zones as they form. When price returns to one of those zones and prints a rejection candle with a long wick and elevated tick-volume, the wick is scored. If the close reclaims the wick midpoint and the next bar confirms with follow-through, a BUY or SELL arrow prints with entry, stop and targets already attached.
You can edit every threshold in the Inputs tab: wick ratio, minimum wick size, volume z-score threshold, lookback period, retest distance, ATR fraction, trend filter settings, aggressive mode, break-even behavior.
What it does not do
Wick Absorption Reversal Pulse does not work well against a strong higher-timeframe trend, unless you enable countertrend mode. It also struggles around low-liquidity rollover, when tick-volume itself is unreliable.
Spot FX tick volume is broker-dependent and varies by feed. This is an approximation of participation, not order-book evidence. This is not a Bookmap replacement and no such claim is made. The z-score tells you whether participation was abnormal relative to recent history on your chart, not whether a specific whale stepped in.
It will not signal every reversal. The five-part filter is designed to reduce false setups, which means it will miss some moves that a plain wick tool would take. If you prefer higher frequency over precision, this may feel too selective.
It does not predict the next move. It reacts to a completed rejection candle and waits for confirmation. By the time the arrow prints, the initial wick has closed and follow-through has started.
How it pairs with other tools
Wick Absorption Reversal Pulse is a rejection-reversal signal tool. It does not tell you whether the higher timeframe is in trend or range, and it does not manage the trade after entry.
If you trade confluence setups, you might pair it with VP MACD Intraday Pulse MT4 to confirm that momentum is diverging at the rejection, or Adaptive ATR Trend MT4 to filter reversals that go against the prevailing trend.
If you trade swept liquidity and want a second layer of confirmation before you enter, Candle Phase Sweep Pulse MT4 gives you a phase-shift signal that can validate the timing of the reversal.
These are complements, not substitutes. They address different parts of the same decision.
Installation and setup
Copy the .ex4 file into the MQL4/Indicators folder inside your terminal's data folder, refresh the Navigator panel in MetaTrader 4, then drag Wick Absorption Reversal Pulse onto the chart. Every threshold is editable in the Inputs tab.
