Swing Trendline Break & Fakeout: Confirmed Structure on TradingView

by ZynAlgoAugust 6, 20265 min read

What the Tool Does

Swing Trendline Break & Fakeout converts confirmed swing pivot sequences into projected support and resistance lines on TradingView. The indicator builds descending resistance from two confirmed lower swing highs and ascending support from two confirmed higher swing lows. Every pivot requires a configurable number of closed bars on both sides before it is accepted, ensuring the structure never relies on an unconfirmed turning point.

Once a trendline is active, the indicator monitors for a closed bar beyond the line, a break event. If price returns inside the projected zone within a strict bar-count window and confirms on a second close, the tool registers a fakeout. Both break and fakeout signals are displayed with descriptive labels, and an optional risk overlay shows entry, stop, and take-profit levels based on an ATR multiplier.

The Problem It Addresses

Traders drawing trendlines manually face three recurring frustrations: pivots shift as new bars appear, the decision to call a "break" is subjective, and fakeouts are often recognized only in hindsight. This indicator solves all three by locking pivots after a defined confirmation period, requiring a full closed bar to trigger a break, and imposing a hard deadline, measured in bars, for price to return inside and validate a fakeout.

The result is an objective, repeatable workflow that removes the guesswork from swing-based structure. You see only confirmed lines, and every signal arrives with the exact condition that created it.

How It Is Used in a Session

When you load the indicator, adjust Pivot Strength to match the swing rhythm of your instrument, higher values produce fewer, more stable pivots; lower values increase sensitivity. Set Extension Bars to control how far forward an active trendline remains eligible for a signal. The Fakeout Window parameter defines the maximum number of bars price has to reverse back inside the line after an initial break.

Choose your Signal Mode: "Break" for breakout-only signals, "Fakeout" for reversal-only signals, or "Both" to see everything. The default emphasizes fakeouts because those events capture failed breakouts and potential liquidity grabs.

As the session progresses, the indicator draws lines in real time. When a bar closes beyond a trendline, you receive a break signal: BUY - Break above descending resistance or SELL - Break below ascending support. If price then closes back inside the line within your fakeout window and confirms on the next bar, the signal updates to BUY - Fakeout below support or SELL - Fakeout above resistance.

Enable the optional risk display to see simulated stop-loss and take-profit levels. The panel enters at the signal close, places a stop using your ATR multiplier, and plots R-multiple targets. This is a closed-bar simulation, any open position at the chart's right edge is excluded.

Who It Fits

This tool serves three overlapping groups:

  • Breakout traders who want objective, swing-derived lines instead of discretionary trendline drawing. The hard pivot confirmation and closed-bar break requirement eliminate premature entries.
  • Reversal traders who study failed breaks, stop hunts, and liquidity grabs. The explicit fakeout window turns "I missed that reversal" into a repeatable setup.
  • Closed-bar confirmation users who refuse to act on wicks or incomplete candles. Every signal waits for the bar to close, and every fakeout confirmation requires a second closed bar.

Test the default settings first, then adjust pivot strength and the fakeout window to the instrument's personality. Slower-moving markets may need a longer window; fast, choppy instruments may need tighter pivots.

What It Does NOT Do

This indicator does not predict which breaks will succeed or which fakeouts will lead to sustained reversals. It identifies structure and events, it does not assess trend strength, volume confirmation, or macro context. A valid break signal can still fail if the broader trend opposes it, and a fakeout signal can still lead to a whipsaw if volatility spikes.

The tool does not adapt line placement to volatility or time of day. The pivot strength and extension settings are static until you change them manually. If your instrument's behavior shifts mid-session, the lines remain governed by the original parameters.

The risk panel is a closed-bar simulation, not a live trade tracker. It does not account for slippage, partial fills, or any open position at the chart's right edge. Use it as a visual guide, not a performance report.

Finally, the indicator does not replace discretionary context. Use the lines as structured reference points, not as a promise that every break or reversal will succeed. Market conditions, news events, and order flow can override technical structure at any time.

How It Pairs with Other Tools

Swing Trendline Break & Fakeout works alongside other TradingView indicators that provide complementary layers:

  • S&R Pro TDV adds horizontal support and resistance zones, giving you both swing-based diagonal lines and key horizontal levels in one workspace.
  • Liquidity Heatmap TDV or Order Barrier TDV can highlight where stop clusters sit, helping you assess whether a fakeout signal aligns with a liquidity event.
  • Divergence Wave TDV adds momentum confirmation, if a fakeout signal coincides with bullish or bearish divergence, the setup gains an additional filter.
  • Phase Filter TDV or Adaptive ATR Trend TDV can help you avoid taking counter-trend fakeout signals when the broader trend is strong and persistent.

Because this indicator is priced at zero, it pairs freely with any other tool in the TradingView catalog. You can layer it into an existing setup without budget friction.
